Short bio

Cristina Planas Leitão was born in Porto, (PT), 1983. Holds a BA in Dance Performance from ArtEZ (NL, 2006). She has worked extensively with David Zambrano since 2005 as a student and in 2010 she was one of 50 artists chosen to be a part of 50 days of Flying Low and Passing Through in Costa Rica certifying her in both techniques which she is teaching internationally in open studios and European Universities. As a performer, has collaborated closely with Italian choreographer Gabriella Maiorino and Dansmakers Amsterdam (2017-2012); performed in the revival of Experience # 1 by Isabelle Schad (DE) in 2013; performed for Flávio Rodrigues (Nil-City – 2013), Catarina Miranda (REIPOSTO REIMORTO – 2015) and is currently in Marco da Silva Ferreira’s new piece Brother.  In 2015, she is one of the selected artists to participate in The Porto Sessions by Meg Stuart. As rehearsal director she has worked for Hofesh Shechter’s (2012-2014) and Gregory Maqoma’s (2015) creations for Companhia Instável. Focusing on her own choreographic work, in 2011/12 she is co-creator & performer of The very delicious piece with Jasmina Krizaj and in 2014 The Very Boring Piece continuing this partnership. The XL version of The Very Delicious Piece was finalist at Danse Élargie 2016 at Théâtre de la Ville, Paris. Individually, premieres bear me and the piece FM [featuring mortuum], in 2016, with an extensive national tour. Her work has been presented in Plesni Teater Ljubljana (SI); I like to watch Too, Julidans Festival Amsterdam (NL); Stara Mestna Elektrarna, Ljubljana (SI); Maribor 2012 European Capital of Culture; Teatro Campo Alegre, Porto (PT); CAAA, Guimarães – European Capital of Culture (PT); Hellerau – Europäisches Zentrum der Künsten, Dresden (DE), The Place, London (UK); GUIdance Festival, Guimarães (PT); Teatro Municipal do Porto (PT); Centro de Arte de Ovar; Cine-Teatro Louletano, Loulé (PT); Festival Cumplicidades, Lisboa (PT); BoxNova Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisboa (PT), Teatro Académico Gil Vicente, Coimbra, Centro de Arte de Ovar, among many others and has been Artist in Residence in several European venues, such as Dance Ireland; O Espaço do Tempo; Centro Danza Canal, Dansateliers Rotterdam to name a few. She has been receiving support from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (PT), Fundação GDA (PT) and DGArtes (PT). In the cultural initiative field, when returning to Porto, in 2011, she was one of the initiators of “encontros desNORTE” and most recently, in 2016 creates and coordinates the project Aquecimento Paralelo for Teatro Municipal do Porto, running since then and in 2017 collaborates with the same venue for Festival DDD as part of the audience mediation team.

Cristina Planas Leitão was born in Porto, (PT), 1983. Holds a BA in Dance Performance from ArtEZ – Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem (NL) – 2006. She has worked extensively with David Zambrano since 2005 as a student. In 2010 she was one of 50 artists chosen to be a part of 50 days of Flying Low and Passing Through in Costa Rica certifying her in both techniques. Since then, Cristina has been sharing her knowledge of the work internationally at ArtEZ (NL), where she is a guide to 4th year students and a guest faculty member; Codarts Rotterdam; Tanzquartier Wien; Ginasiano Escola de Dança; Dansateliers Rotterdam; de Stilte NL, Marameo (Berlin); K3/ Kampnagel Hamburg; Henny Jurriens Stichting, AmsterdamFórum Dança, LisbonBalleteatro; Dance IrelandFolkwang University – Essen; among many other places.

From 2007 to 2012 worked for Italian/ Dutch based choreographer Gabriella Maiorino and Dansmakers Amsterdam (NL) participating in all her pieces during this period as a performer and/ or assistant to the choreographer. In 2013 Cristina has performed in the revival of Experience # 1, a piece by Isabelle Schad (DE), at Serralves Contemporary Art Museum, Porto. In the same year, from September to December, joins the ballet contemporâneo do norte for the creation of NIL-CITY by Flávio Rodrigues (PT). For the company she has created and coordinated the research project Conquering the studio: a time for research inviting Jared Gradinger (DE/USA), Lee Meir (IL/DE), Robert Clark (UK) and Mala Kline (SI/BE). This project has had 3 editions, the last two, in collaboration with Companhia Instável, Porto.

In 2011, was one of the initiators of “encontros desNORTE”, which culminated in the summer of 2013 in an open Platform for the artists of the city to show their work and to collaborate in an open discourse space with the support of Teatro Nacional de São João. It continues yearly since then in a co-organized way. In 2016 created the project Aquecimento Paralelo for Teatro Municipal do Porto, running since then, which she is coordinating. In 2017, for Festival DDD she works for Teatro Municipal do Porto, within Programa Paralelo and audience mediation.

As rehearsal director she has worked for Hofesh Shechter (2012-2014) and Gregory Maqoma (2015) for Companhia Instável. In 2015, she is one of the selected artists to participate in The Porto Sessions  – a project drawn and developed by Meg Stuart/ Damaged Goods and Mezzannine. Recently, she has performed in REIPOSTO REIMORTO by Catarina Miranda and is currently performing for Marco da Silva Ferreira’s piece Brother.

In 2011/12 she is co-creator & performer of The very delicious piece with Jasmina Krizaj – a piece produced in the frame of the network Modul Dance (EDN) with more than 30 international performances. This piece as been nominated for the Gibanica prize in Slovenia. With this creation they established a long-term collaboration continuing later on in 2014, with the making of The Very Boring Piece. In 2014 she also premiered her own solo bear me, presented at GUIdance Festival 2015 in Centro Cultural Vila Flor, Guimarães which was acclaimed by the critic. In 2016 creates the piece FM [featuring mortuum] with an extensive national tour, receiving support from the Ministry of Culture and several other foundations. In the same year, with an XL version of The Very Delicious Piece, she was finalist, together with Jasmina Krizaj in a team of 8 performers at Danse Élargie 2016 at Théâtre de la Ville, Paris.
